16 January 2010: Confusion reigns over whether South African athlete Caster Semenya can return to competition. Earlier this week the sport's world governing body, the IAAF, said she could run again while it investigated her gender but later the South African Olympic Committee claimed she was not free to run until the IAAF had made a definitive decision. 19-year-old Semenya won the 800m at the World Championships in Berlin last August but it later transpired that just hours before she competed the IAAF demanded that the athlete take a gender test due to concerns that she was not eligible to compete as a woman.
