Cup of Nations points to World Cup

football21 January 2010:  The Africa Cup of Nations in Angola highlights the skill and entertainment produced by African teams.  But the question on many people's lips is: Can an African side win the 2010 World Cup?  Reigning African champions, Egypt, have been impressive in this year's Cup of Nations but they failed to reach the World Cup finals.  Neither Cameroon's Indomitable Lions or the Super Eagles of Nigeria look the sides they have been in the past, while Algeria are very much the outsiders.  South Africa hosts Bafana Bafana have been out of sorts for the past year, so much so that many of their own supporters have transferred allegience to one of the two other African sides, Ghana and Ivory Coast.  Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is a key player for the Black Stars while his club-mate Didier Drogba carries the hopes of the Elephants, he is scoring goals for fun for the Premier League outfit.  If any African team is to win I say it will be the Elephants of the Ivory Coast.  What do you think?

FIFA to give away World Cup tickets
football15 August:  World governing body Fifa has launched a fund to give away 120,000 free tickets for the 2010 World Cup to poor South Africans.  The tickets will be a reward to people involved in social development projects in the country.  Danny Jordaan, chief of the Local Organising Committee, said the tickets will enable people who would never have a chance to attend the World Cup to see the event.  Fifa has already set low prices for South Africans with tickets set at $17 compared to $80 for international tickets but with over a quarter of the workforce unemployed and many who are working earning less than $10 a day, even the cheap tickets are out of reach.  40,000 tickets have been allocated to construction workers who are building the stadiums but Jordaan warned that other citizens must pay to watch the matches.

Manchester City spending spree continues
football29 July:  Manchester City's spending spree continues with the reported £16 million signing of Kolo Touré from Arsenal.  The Ivory Coast defender signed a 4-year contract at Eastlands, ending a seven-year spell with the Gunners.  City boss Mark Hughes made no secret of the fact that he was looking to bring top class defenders to the club and the 28-year-old Touré fits the bill, bringing skill and experience.  So far Hughes has been unsuccessful in his efforts to lure John Terry away from Chelsea or Joleon Lescott from Everton.  His latest purchase has brought the club's spending this summer to around £96 million after securing the services of Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and now Kolo Touré.  Recession?  What recession?

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
