20 May: Wenger to stay at Arsenal
football20 May:  Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has committed his future to the club following speculation that he might leave the Emirates in the summer after failing to win a trophy in four years.  The 59-year-old Frenchman had been linked with Real Madrid but reaffirmed his commitment to the Gunners on Wednesday after talks with Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis.  Wenger's last success in his 13 years at the club was winning the FA Cup in 2005.  He has two years remaining on his current contract and had always insisted he would never break it.

Champions League finalists determined
football07 May:  Manchester United and Barcelona will contest the UEFA Champions League final in Rome on 27th May.  On Tuesday United overwhelmed Arsenal 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium to win their semi-final 4-1 on aggregate.  Ji-Sung Park slotted in after eight minutes and three minutes later the tie was effectively over when Cristiano Ronaldo scored the first of his two goals with a free kick from 40-yards.  Barcelona progressed thanks to an Andres Iniesta wonderstrike deep into stoppage time to level 1-1 with Chelsea and go through on the away goals rule.  Michael Essien gave Chelsea a first-half lead but the Blues were unable to add further goals and were left to ponder several apparently good penalty appeals that were turned away by the Norweigian referee.

Ryan Giggs Wins Players Award
football27 April: Ryan Giggs has won the Professional Footballers Association Player of the Year Award for the first time in his career.  The Manchester United midfielder has been in terrific form in this, his 18th season at the Old Trafford club.  Giggs, now 35, beat fellow United players Nemanja Vidic, Edwin Van Der Sar, Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo as well as Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard to win the title.  The Welsh international made his United debut against Everton at the age of 17 in March 1991.  His manager then, as now, was Sir Alex Ferguson.  If he plays against Arsenal in the European Champions League semi-final, first leg on 29 April, it will be his 800th appearance for the club.
