football21 June:  Brazil stunned world champions Italy 3-0 on Sunday to reach the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup in South Africa.  The South American champions overwhelmed their European opponents with two goals from Luis Fabiano and an own goal from defender Andrea Dossena.  Brazil now meet hosts South Africa in one of Friday's two semi-finals.  The USA stunned African champions Egypt 3-0 to qualify for the other semi-final but they will need to produce a magnificent performance against European champions Spain who set a new world record of 15 consecutive victories in their 2-0 win over South Africa.
 
Egypt protest to Fifa about penalty decision
football16 June:  Egypt have lodged an official complaint with Fifa after English referee Howard Webb awarded a last-minute penalty against them in their Confederations Cup match against Brazil.  the African champions had scored twice in a minute to level at 3-3 against South American champions, Brazil.  Webb initially seemed to point to the corner flag after Egyptian defender Ahmed Al Mohamady cleared the ball off the line, but then gave a penalty and sent off Al Mohamady after conferring with his assistant.  Egypt's view is that the assistant could only have made the penalty decision after reviewing video evidence, which is not allowed by Fifa.  It is an interesting point.  Video evidence clearly shows Al Mohamady diving to his right to deflect the ball away - a clear handball and a clear sending-off offence.  Kaka stepped up to fire home the penalty and record a narrow 4-3 win for Brazil.  So, was justice done in the end?

June World Cup qualifiers round-up
football08 June:  Mexico's dismal start to the qualification campaign continued on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat to El Salvador.  Meanwhile their main rivals in the North, Central America and Caribbean group both won, the USA defeating Honduras 2-1 and Costa Rica winning 3-2 in Trinidad and Tobago.  In African there were wins for Gabon, Tunisia and Ghana while Nigeria recorded a welcome 3-0 win over Kenya after only drawing their first game away in Mozambique.  In Europe wins by England (4-0 over Kazakhstan), Denmark (1-0 in Sweden) and Netherlands (2-1 in Iceland) maintained their top positions in their respective groups.
