England’s attack coach Brian Smith has apologised to South African referee Jonathan Kaplan for comments made after England’s 23-15 defeat to Wales in the Six Nations on 14 February. Smith says he has had “a positive conversation” with Kaplan after earlier accusing him of not treating the teams equally. Meanwhile New Zealand fly-half Dan Carter has had successful surgery on his torn Achilles tendon. The 26-year-old was playing for Perpignan when he was injured against Stade Francais on 31 January. He is expected to be out for six months. Finally Eddie O’Sullivan has been appointed coach of the USA. The former Ireland boss worked for USA rugby for two years in the 1990s and takes charges through to the 2011 World Cup.
