The 2012 Olympics in London are now less than six months away and on Saturday an international field of athletes took part in the Aviva Indoor International in Glasgow with more than an eye on the Games this summer.  We talk to three athletes hoping to compete at the Olympics - USA sprint hurdler and World Championship silver medallist Danielle Carruthers (below left, photo copyright Fast Track), Kenya's middle distance runner Augustine Choge and the evergreen sprinter from St Kitts and Nevis, Kim Collins.

Novak Djokavic confirmed his position as world number one men's tennis player after an epic five-sets win over Rafael Nadal in Sunday's Australian Open final.  We hear his comments about that win and his respect for Nadal after the longest final in Grand Slam history.

African footballers have graced the English Premier League for over twenty years now but with many currently on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, how are their clubs managing without them?  For example, title-chasing Chelsea could only draw 0-0 at Norwich on Saturday while two of their players on duty at the Cup of Nations, Solomon Kalou and Didier Drogba, combined to score the only goal for the Ivory Coast in their win over Sudan.  Our Chief Football correspondent Stuart Weir looks at the evidence from last weekend’s Premier League fixtures.

clint_dempsey_cropped_lowresFulham striker Clint Dempsey (right) took his goal tally for the season to 15 at the weekend with a hat-trick against Newcastle.  The United States international who scored against England at the 2010 World Cup talks to us about his strong Christian faith.

And with London hosting the 2012 Olympic Games in less than 200 days we look back to the first time the Games came to London over a hundred years ago.

The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations begins in Gabon and Equitorial Guinea on Saturday with 16 nations battling to be crowned African Champions.  Defending champions Egypt will be missing along with Nigeria and South Africa after all three failed to qualify.  One of the favourites this time are the Black Stars of Ghana who went further than any other African nation in the 2010 FIFA World Cup reaching the quarter finals.  Last weekend the Black Stars drew 1-1 with South Africa in a Cup of Nations warm-up game in Johannesburg.  Solomon Izang Ashoms talked to the Black Stars defender, John Pantsil, who plays his club football in England for Leicester City, to find out about the team's hopes for the tournament.

One of the enduring memories of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona is the sight of Great Britain's 400 metres runner Derek Redmond being helped across the finish line by his father after tearing a hamstring in the final.  Last week Jim Redmond's actions in "dedication and support to his son's sporting career" were recognised when he was nominated to be an Olympic Torch Bearer for this year's Olympic Games.  Derek Redmond talks to Stuart Weir about his memories of the 1992 final twenty years on as we consider the role of athletes' families in providing support and encouragement to their athlete sons and daughters.
